LEARN TO PLAY PIANO

There are any number of reasons that you might be looking for a piano teacher

You played as a kid but could do with a little refresher

You’d like your child or children to be able to play

You’re ready to start (or continue) your music exam progress

You want to play live

You just want to play

HOW PIANO LESSONS WORK

Whatever the reason, I promise you: I’ve worked with people just like you.

Usually, I teach half-hour piano lessons on a weekly one-to-one basis. However, this is down to your comfort levels – some younger pupils find 30 minutes too taxing, whereas more advanced pupils might need a little bit of extra time.

Finding a good piano teacher near you is about making sure they can help you to achieve your goals. That’s why I offer fully bespoke teaching as standard.

Jim Atkinson, Piano Teacher

I’ve been playing the piano for over 30 years. In that time I’ve worked as a gigging musician, as well as continuing my personal music learning.

A massive fan of jazz and blues, my teaching style is about empowering you to feel confident and comfortable at the keyboard. I’ve taught beginners through to experts, from 5 to 75. I have passed my DBS enhanced check, and also have experience teaching in schools

Based in the beautiful Victorian model village of Saltaire, most of my teaching takes place in my home. Here I teach on a Kawai upright piano, in my dedicated piano room. My home is close to public transport from Leeds, Bradford, Bingley, and Shipley.

When I’m not tinkling the ivories, I can be found roaming Saltaire with my loyal Labrador, Delia.

Piano Exams

If you decide that you want to go down the route of playing piano for certification, there are several pathways we can take.

The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) exams provide internationally recognised qualifications in both piano, and in music theory. I can teach the full graded exam syllabus, as well as music theory (up to Grade 5, as needed for the Grade 5 piano exam).

The London College of Music provides an alternative route to ABRSM for people who would like to take exams but might prefer different styles. LCM offers both classical and contemporary jazz certification.

If you prefer the Trinity College Syllabus, this can also be arranged. Now offering their Rock and Pop syllabus!

Don’t know which to do? I can help guide you through the right exam syllabus for you.
